Frequently Asked Questions
Is my UK Pet Passport still valid?
Since 1-1-2021 (Brexit) Animal Health Certificates have replaced Pet Passports and are necessary to take your dog, cat or ferret with you into the EU. Old Pet Passports issued within an EU member state can still be used if the Rabies vaccination is still valid.
Which documents can’t be used as vaccination evidence?
For each trip an AHC is required. If the Rabies vaccination is still up to date a new vaccination is not needed. If your are visiting Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland or Norway than a tapeworm treatment would be required for each trip.
What do I need to take my dog, cat or ferret to an EU country or Northern Ireland?
- have a microchip implanted
- have a valid Rabies vaccination (issued at least 21 days before signing your AHC)
- have an AHC issued within 10 days of travel or a valid EU pet Passport.
- have a tapeworm treatment if you are visiting Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland or Norway
What are the tapeworm treatment requirements on entry into the UK?
A vet must administer a tapeworm treatment and enter the details of the treatment on the AHC. This must be done no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours of entry into the UK.
What do I do if my pet’s rabies vaccine is no longer in date?
Your pet(s) will require a new Rabies vaccination and will not be able to travel until 21 days after the vaccination.
What do I need to do if I travel frequently?
An Animal Health Certificate is required for each trip, but repeat AHC’s are cheaper if ordered long enough in advance. Repeat Rabies vaccinations are not needed, as long as they are up to date. If visiting Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland or Norway then a tapeworm treatment would be necessary for each trip.
Where can I find further information about pet travel?
Keep up to date with all the latest pet travel requirements by visiting the government pet travel webpage.
How long are AHCs valid for?
An AHC is valid for10 days to travel into the EU or Northern Ireland. You van use it for 1 return trip and for onward travel within Europe for up to 4 months. After the four months additional certificates are required on entry back into the UK.
What information will I need to provide when applying for an AHC?
We will require information about your pet(s) like name, breed and date of birth, but also information about the Microchip and that it is up to date with it’s Rabies vaccination and tapeworm treatments. Your vet can provide the necessary documentation through the clinical history of your pet(s) regarding the Microchip, Rabies vaccination and Tapeworm treatments. Also, we require general information about your travel plans to make sure your AHC is valid throughout your journey.
How much does an AHC cost?
An AHC for the first pet normally costs £99 with each additional pet (up to a maximum of 5) costing £30. We require a minimum of seven days notice. If an urgent request is made (less than seven days) please check availability. If we are able to provide an AHC it will cost £199 with each additional pet (up to a maximum of 5) costing £30.
Which language AHC will I need?
An AHC is required to be in dual language if the country of first entry speaks a different language to English. Therefore, if you are planning to enter the EU in France we would prepare an English/French AHC. If however you were flying directly to Italy without transiting any other country, we would prepare an English/Italian AHC. Once you’re inside the EU you can travel onward between U countries for up to four months without additional certification/documentation.
How and where do we collect the AHC?
We are a mobile certification service and therefore once you have contacted us through the website and we have gathered all the relevant information, we will prepare your AHC and arrange a meeting place. Please bear in mind we are based in Poole, Dorset. If you require us to meet you further afield, please let us know as there may be a delivery charge, we will discuss this directly with you.
Who needs to be present when collecting the AHC?
When signing your AHC we need the owner to be present with the pet(s) and, if applicable, with the nominated person/pet travel company. This is because it is a legal requirement for us to scan your pet’s microchip and have the owner sign the declaration to say the pet is travelling for non-commercial reasons, before we can sign the AHC.
How do I make payment?
Once we have received your booking request and all relevant information we will prepare your AHC and send you a payment request. In this request you will find the payment details for a bank transfer. We require payment before the day of issuing the AHC and before collection.
